At the end of every project we do a Lessons Learned exercise. I'm pushing for us to do it throughout the project so we can capture them as they happen because even a short project can take over the memory of what actually happened. To that end, I've added a new tab to our Dynamics/P4W thingy, and typed in the ones on our central list into our template project. I haven't formally announced it - I'll see if anyone notices! - but I will introduce it properly in September when everyone's together.

In my personal life, I learned long ago to never say never because it just makes God crack the divine knuckles and go to work on you. A friend has just demonstrated the truth of this by being determined not to appoint a man to a particular role. Well, I could have told them that would just provoke the Almighty to finding the PERFECT man for the job - and that is indeed what has happened :D

Another episode of Umbrella Academy. I'm so glad I decided to watch from the start - it's filling in all the gaps.

I expanded my list of characters a bit further this morning. I don't normally have a lot of characters because I'm worried I won't make each one distinct enough for my readers to tell them apart. Of course, this being a crime story, quite a few won't be DOING a lot... I might also have over complicated the Smiler thing; simplifying it would cut out some of the bodies. The next stage in the snowflake is to expand each sentence in my summary paragraph into its own paragraph, so that's tomorrow's job.

But I'm asking myself why am I writing another real world novel? My first love is fantasy but I don't write it very much. Of course, there's all the world building and creature creating... But in a crime story there's all sorts of real-world stuff to get right...

I dunno. Harding and Patel want me to write them. Who am I to deny my characters what they want?

So, people are talking about how they want change! - and then you look at the Labour party and realise about all that's going to change is the colour of the rosettes. Although Jonathan Pie did point out that Starmer is a former human rights lawyer; I mean, at least he realises human rights is a Thing... right...? Anyway, I'm voting Green. Not because I believe the Green Party candidate will oust the sitting Labour MP - Liverpool, indeed, the whole of Merseyside these days, is pretty firmly red - but because I want to send a message to a) the Green Party to let them know they have support and they shouldn't give up and b) my MP to let them know I give a shit about the planet and I want them to, too. Meanwhile, Starmer is talking up his defence plans... Does nobody realise that working for environmental and social justice will make the world a safer place?! There'll be less competition for land and resources, a reduction in the threat of flooding and extreme weather, and less need to point a gun at people to make your point.

*heavy sigh*

Anyway, voting is a duty for me and no vote is wasted.

I showed the husband the latest Count Binface video, which raised a smile. Seriously, look him up. I only wish there was a Binface in Liverpool :D

Today was a desky day, and I actually got quite a bit done. Project ideas that have been approved by the prioritisation body now have a record on P4W, and I did a deep overhaul of the old SharePoint site because I'm going to have to keep using that in the short term. There are currently 3 projects not being tracked on P4W but two of them are on the brink of being finished - I think I will then have an argument for bringing the last one into the fold since it's expected to keep going until Q1 next year. It just felt really good to have the time and space to do a proper job rather than squeezing it in between other tasks and/or meetings. I've also reorganised the dashboard we use for reporting to follow the new PMF, which gets us away from 'what does delivery mean to you today?'.

I'm going to swap my days round so I WFH tomorrow and go into the office on Friday. This will allow me to go and vote in a civilised manner and be on time for a 9am meeting.

Watched 'Coming to America' with the husband, so no Psych tonight. CTA is still a funny film, although some of it is pretty dated, now.

Eldest grandson is having a lot of fun - he went jet skiing today! I'm equal parts terrified at the thought of him out there alone (apart from his 5 mates, of course...) and proud that he organised and paid for the trip all by himself.

Granddaughter is measuring extra-large just like younger grandson - any thoughts we might have had about a delicate little flower of a girl have been firmly quashed >D Daughter's midwife has requested an extra scan for her, just to keep an eye on everything.

And my new nail shaper/buffer arrived, so I spent a couple of minutes buffing my nails. Sometimes I'm just a girl.

Still, it was a week in which shit got done.

One of the regular reports I prepare was due this week, although I think I got the date wrong in my calendar - I had Friday down for the submission when I'm pretty sure it should have been Wednesday.  Anyway, I managed to wrangle the people I needed updates from and got it out.

In the middle of all that, I got a request on Thursday to produce a closure report for what I can only describe as a 'zombie project' - it should have been properly closed down at least a year ago (possibly 18 months) but somehow just kept shuffling forwards.  The real shame is that it's a GOOD project and the work done will benefit the university in lots of ways, but the steering group just never quite agreed we could close it.  So, now, triggering the closure process feels rather artificial.  Anyway, the main developer and I have put something together that gives a brief summary of the work done, what they still want to do, and what won't get done.

I also had a tech issue with the webpages.  I can edit the text on a page (which is good because there are some small tweaks to make) and I can take down images but when I tried to upload the new version of the dashboard (which is the REAL reason for giving me access) it refused.  The techie person who has been helping so far said they couldn't work out why, so their boss will have to take a look when they're back off leave.

No gaming in the week but I did watch another episode of Marvel's Runaways, which I'm getting in to.  I like the diversity of the main characters (4 girls and 2 boys!), and the nuance around the 'baddies' - who all seem to be working from a basically good place.  I need to keep watching to find out what their real purpose is, though!

Oh, the son's birthday was almost a disaster.  We'd picked a restaurant to order from, put our order in, waited 10 minutes - then got told they couldn't take it!  So then we had to scrabble round to find an alternative - which the son found - put in the order and - the food was delicious!  A bit cold, but really, really tasty.  So, disaster averted :D

And it's snowed!  And I need to go shopping...  See you next week, DW!

So, it's the last Saturday before Christmas and the last time I will venture into town this year, I hope - other than to pick up some nice cakes for the family assembly on Christmas Eve.  Next Saturday is Boxing Day - combining a Saturday with the first day of the sales is NOT something I want to experience!  Also, I want to hibernate as much as possible next week.

OK, so most of this year has been spent in hibernation, but I mean not doing anything indoors, either.

I read a really interesting article about Mary the other day - unlike most women in the Bible, you never find her in a domestic setting.  I'm going to be More Mary between Christmas and New Year :D

I worked right up to the last minute yesterday, which was one advantage of working from home.  When we're in the office, there's usually someone trying to chivvy us out of the building early.  My PDPR is drafted, based on my new JD, but needs a bit more work - this is now officially Next Year's Problem.  I also managed to complete my refresh of the doc suite and write the governance doc.

And now I have 3 glorious weeks of nesting and playing games ahead.  Bye for now, DW!

I spent a good deal of last week rushing from one thing to another, even when I was sitting at my desk, but I got some shit done.
- spoke (fairly coherently) on Candlemas at St M's
- redrafted the safeguarding policy for the Parish
- drafted a role descriptor for Parish Wardens (now need to do them for all the other roles...)
- led ToG on Hannah at (almost) a moment's notice (why did I pick the Tuesday right after speaking at St M's?!)
- recorded two (count 'em! - two!!!) powerpoint presentations for work
- mapped 5 processes (still 3 on my desk with who knows how many to come)
- a very tasty tea of lamb leg steaks
- some reorganising of 70x700 (but still sooo much to do...)
- 2 sessions of belly dance and 2 sessions of Zumba

So, yeah - that was a week.

It also left me with little time for being social.  We had a new starter this week.  We exchanged a few words during the week, but nothing meaningful.  Partly this is just me being me.  On Thursday morning, another colleague informed me that some monster thing that I didn't want to do anyway had been cancelled.  I raised my hands to Heaven and exclaimed, 'Thank God!' (mostly because this would give me time to finish the powerpoint thing).

New colleague said, 'I've never seen you so happy!'.  Given that they've only known me a week, this pulled me up short.  Without putting any more pressure on myself, I think my sociability at work needs some attention!  I'm not even sure when life got to be so busy, I just know that it dialled up at some point before Christmas and hasn't dialled back down.  Thankfully, I don't bring my work home - but I do church stuff during my lunch break.  I think I'm going to book myself one 'free' lunch every week.

I am hardly ever bored - there's always something to do. And I'm also getting better at doing things I don't want to do.

Yesterday was one of the fullest days I think I've ever had! The husband is getting a taste for going out and has taken up going for short walks, which I encourage because otherwise he'd just seize up completely. So, yesterday we decided to go for a walk together, since I was off work and had nothing more important than cleaning and gaming on my 'to do' list. We ended up being out for longer than either of us expected and paying for a rather expensive lunch that wasn't all that great. But, it was good to be out and to be together.

I also managed three loads of washing, full clean of the living room and (this is the discipline part!) a full clean of the kitchen, which I almost persuaded myself I didn't need to do. But I felt so much better when it was done - and it only took half-an-hour.

And I made progress with 'I Am Setsuna' and 'Once Upon a Time'.

OUAT is getting to be a bit like 'Lost' - I just want it to be over, now. The 7th series really wasn't necessary and there have been so many twists and turns. Who really is the Big Bad in this one?! Two characters that are fascinating me, though, and are keeping me watching are Tilly/Alice and Samdi/Facilier. Oh, and Gothel/Eloise - completely amoral, which makes her probably the most interesting of all!

Today is pay day and I am taking myself shopping for journaling supplies, Lush stuff, and some new trainers. Retail therapy!!!

I've managed to break the back of the editing of Mannerley. I've cleaned up a number of niggly things that bothered me during my read through and I've also strengthened the ghost scene which is, after all, the climax of the plot. I want to go over that once more, though. Then it's the Big Job - the dialogue. I've found some excellent blog posts on The Write Practice and Ride The Pen, which I am going to use. First step is making sure the dialogue works for each scene - driving plot, developing character, all that. Then, I'll make sure each character's 'voice' is properly represented. And then I smooth out any remaining roughness before sending out to my Betas, take on board any final feedback and (drum roll, please!) then we self-publish. *squeals with excitement* I think my deadline of end of August is probably over-ambitious, so it might be September, but having an aggressive timeline has really pushed me to Get It Done. I also thought it was nearer to being done-done than it was. But I have enjoyed the editing process far more than I expected to, perhaps because of the delay. Anyway, there is light at the end of the tunnel and I will reach it by taking one step at a time.

So, today is my last day of hols.  I will spend it well.

I managed to grab a bit of time with Primal yesterday.  The lava monsters are HARD.  Well, they aren't really hard to fight but if they manage to hit Jen they take a lot of life.  And Scree has hardly any energy and the Djinn form requires him to have LOTS.  Looking forward to this realm I am not.

I also read the Elizabeth fanfic - and it was cute.

Took the grandson to get his hair cut yesterday and he came out looking suitably dapper.  In the evening, he and the husband made a really delicious spag bol.  It was great to sit upstairs listening to them chatting away (no idea what they were saying but there was definite conversation!) and smelling the lovely smells wafting up the stairs.

I've had a really good break and I'm (sort of) ready to go back to work.

Shopping!

I have a bit of a mammoth list of stuff to pick up today - but then I haven't been out all week, so that explains it.  I am also going to get my hair cut.

Yesterday was a nice, relaxed day.  Hooray for spending all day in pyjamas.  I watched three episodes of ST:V and Snow White and the Huntsman.  Which was... interesting...?  I did like the fact that she didn't HAVE to marry someone at the end.  And I made more progress with Primal.  I am enjoying the Aetha section.

OK, I need to get moving.  Bye for now, DW.

 Wow, where did 2017 go?

I may do a reflective post at some point but this one is for looking forward.

I am trying goal-setting again because I need something to measure against.  So, my goal is to spend at least 15 hours in January editing Death of an Icecream Seller.  Another goal is to find a new title...   Anyway, I have 17 week nights available in January (I'm not going to pressure myself to work at weekends, which kind of includes this week because I'm on leave, and I have one meeting this month), so it shouldn't be too hard to do an hour a night.  I shall monitor progress...

This week, the goal is to pick up my morning routine and normal bed time because I don't want to get to next Monday and be unprepared.  I want to add a Write Practice practice to my mornings.  I also have a little list of jobs that I want to get through.

Today - top up gas and electricity, clean and tidy our room, put away bills, dig out gas boiler service that we got from the mortgage provider
Tomorrow - clean kitchen including scrub floor and use oven cleaner kit
Wednesday - clean bathroom and toilet
Friday - clean living room, go into town, get hair cut

Thursday is deliberately clear of 'work' because I like to have a do-nothing day in my week off.

In between the jobs will be watching ST:V and playing Primal.

Here's to goals.
