Aug. 31st, 2024 09:27 pmThings I like about the FF games I've played...
Of course, work is probably well underway on FFXVII at this point, so it may actually be FFXVIII we're trying to affect...
- FFVI - the way the whole world changes mid-game
- having to use all your characters in the final dungeon, so there's a reason for levelling them all up
- FFVII - giving magic a physical form as materia, rather than it being some weird ability thing; it actually makes it feel more real
- in Remake, I enjoyed the action-based combat
- FFVIII - drawing & junctioning; I loved finding new spells and trying them out, both as spells and as junctions; I loved using 'draw' on every enemy to see what they were 'hiding'
- Learning abilities from the GFs
- Triple Triad - I've only made sense of it through walkthroughs but it has some great rewards, and the basic game is very easy to get your head around
- Upgrading weapons was a good alternative to hunting for rare/ultimate ones
- FFIX - Vivi's story is, for me, the real story of this game and I remember it much better than Zidane's
- Having said that, Garnet and Zidane's romance is kinda cute
- In terms of gameplay, I liked Chocobo Hot & Cold and the Chocographs - again, only conquered via a walkthrough because life is too short, but an interesting idea for finding items and new areas
- FFX - being able to switch between party members mid-battle; more of this, please!
- FFX-2 - dresspheres are a nice take on the job system
- Spherebreak is a fun mini game, especially when you exploit the loophole
- FFXII - no random battles!!! I know this is pretty much All Games, now, but I loved it so much when I first played the game
- The Gambit System - set it up right, and the gang pretty much take care of themselves
- The License Board - again, an interesting way to level up characters; ZA takes it to a new level
- FFXV - whilst I will always wail at the lack of playable female characters (guests don't count), I did enjoy the bromance
- Cooking wasn't TOO painful, with most ingredients being pretty easy to get hold of
- Gladio's foraging ability was useful, too
- Being able to combine items with magic to form new spells
- FFXVI - the Story! the Characters! Torgal!!!
- Making use of the Eikons' abilities
- A story for the ages
- A roster of playable - and memorable - characters of different genders who are all useful and can all be used at any point, and have their own abilities
- A pet; maybe a pet per character, separate to the summons
- Action-based combat, with all characters being controllable
- Pre-programming actions a la Gambits
- Materia in a limited range of types (e.g., 6 elements), but that can be combined with each other and with items to create new spells
- Summons with useful abilities
- Using chocobos to find useful items
- Some other mini-games that don't require a degree in quantum mechanics to understand
