This time last year I was playing negotiator (or referee?) at work, choosing husband over gaming (:O), and enjoying the marsh marigolds (this year, they're still buds). Oh, and celebrating the Return of the Friday Feature.

Today, I did all my to do's by applying some discipline. I even remembered to stitch up the sleeve on son's jacket without being reminded! And I paid husband some attention ;)

I've also made some progress in Forspoken - although it's only taken me from 62% to 67%. This is a Good Thing - I'm not ready to leave Athia. I thought it was going to be nearer 75%, but there's a Thing I need to do, so I guess that'll take us forward. I've made friends with two more Familiars (the one with the butterfly wings is particularly pretty), and found a couple more cloaks. They are both rather beautiful, but I still like the silver one with the hood. Each new piece of gear has new abilities, which can then be added to existing gear, so if you do have a favourite, you can just upgrade that.

So, my RPG senses were definitely on to something - but I still missed the mark. The answer was much closer than I thought... And quite obvious when I think about it. Is the story ground-breaking? Not really. And it's also very linear. No branching, no Big Decisions. The variety comes from exploring all the Points of Interest - or not. But there's nothing wrong with a familiar story when it's told in an interesting way, and I'm finding it interesting.

I do like the system for upgrading magic. It's a variation on 'use the thing to make it stronger'. Last year I was also pondering playing Skyrim, which had just come to PS+ (or I'd just become aware of it...), where armour becomes stronger when you get hit and weapons become stronger when you hit enemies. I'm still not really sure why that game didn't land with me, though. The graphics aren't great when compared to modern games but that's not really enough to put me off. I did get intimidated by the sheer scale of it. Being told, 'After you reach Point X, you can basically do anything - just ignore the main story,' wasn't helpful. I spent a lot of time in Veilguard ignoring the main story but I always knew where it was. In the way a cat ignores you when you call it by name :D I think I have to admit that there's a fair-sized chunk of contrariness to it - people telling me 'you'll love such-and-such a game' always gives it a black mark before I've even started it >D

Oh, and Primal got a mention in a list of heart-breaking game over screens by FGS! It's such a rarity to see it pop up on any list. Scree is still in my list of favourite sidekicks <3

And that was today.
