Bumped into favourite colleague a couple of times today, apart from attending their session this afternoon. Part of the work they talked about was asking final year students what they would like to tell their first year selves. I rolled my eyes mentally because my position is, if I hadn't done everything just the way I did it, I wouldn't be here at this point with THIS advice - and if younger me took the advice, I wouldn't go through all the things. But these comments were a mix of practical advice about being a student and encouragement to keep going. One of the questions at the end was something along the lines of, 'could you share these comments with this year's first years?', to which, of course, the answer was 'yes!'.

A lot of the sessions I attended, including the key notes, were about fostering a sense of belonging for students. There's a lot of evidence of students feeling lonely and isolated, even post-pandemic, and even when they live in shared accommodation. I just had a vision of kids like grandson #1 hiding in their rooms all day, too nervous to even say hello to people they shared living space with - who were probably feeling just the same!

There were also quite a few sessions on AI. Last year, I went to a presentation where the speaker - a lecturer for the School of Computing and Maths - said as a computer scientist they found AI fascinating, as a lecturer they found it terrifying. The conversation was about how to stop students using it and how to detect it. This year, the world has done a 180. Now the conversations are about how to use it responsibly, and how it can be incorporated into the curriculum, because a) we know we can't stop students using it and b) employers want people with those skills.

I got another hour of Tunic in - taking me up to about 7 hours. I'm about 3/4 of the way through, I think...? Maybe 3/5... Anyway, I've come to a bit of a dead end. I've been to everywhere there is to go... Well, except for the big locked gate...? OK, that's something to look at tomorrow.

Because tomorrow I have a day off work!!! *dances* I am sooo looking forward to just lazing around, doing nothing.

And grandson #2 is a bit better, by the look of it.

Day 1 of the conference went really well. The keynote had interesting things to say about the future of HE - and the world in general. With corporations spanning national borders and with unelected people running them, the whole concept of nation states comes under question. If there's no nations, there's less sense of connection to a nation. But community remains important.

The first session was a discussion on Lego Serious Play, which I went to because a connection I made at graduation was there. We've been trying to make a coffee date but it just hasn't happened. Will keep trying, though! LSP looks interesting - wondering if we can do a team-building thing...?

Second one was about alternative assessments. 44% of neurodiverse students don't declare to the university, so no adjustment is made for them. But the presenters suggested making ALL assessment accessible, so there's no need to adjust.

The third was about a cross-subject research project into the experience of black women giving birth between midwifery and history students. Favourite colleague popped up! History is their thing. We had a very quick chat about Doctor Who, then I went for lunch and they went to talk to another colleague.

After lunch (A Taste of India - yummy!) I went to a session about improving the new Royal Hospital by hanging art rescued from the old one. This was another collaboration - fine art students and museum/art history students.

Then there was one on AI. An academic actively encouraged their students to use AI in their assessment tasks, teaching them how to use it correctly with prompts, and the importance of checking references. The average mark for the module was about the same as last year, but the female students did much better. Maybe they gained confidence in their own ideas through using the AI? Dunno - but interesting to speculate.

Finally, a presentation from someone from Shaping Futures, a government-sponsored body working with FE and HE institutions across the NW. Their funding is officially up next August but they're hoping a change in government will extend it.

The meetings that I had squeezed in here and there were all cancelled! I also skipped the department cascade session. But I kept on top of emails.

Tomorrow, I have more meetings squeezed in between sessions. But I'm on leave on Friday, so what can you do?

Afterwards I popped in to town for a Father's Day card and two 18th birthday cards. Apparently, plastic keys with 18 or 21 on them are no longer a thing in the card shops in our city. Even card shops are becoming a rarity! Thanks to Moonpig, no doubt. I've found some key options on Etsy, though, so I'll order one tomorrow.

Managed to get an hour on Tunic. I've reached a new area! I spend a lot of time wandering vaguely and then find a new location by accident :D I'm building up the instruction book pretty well. And I have another weapon. I just need to remember I have an inside area AND an outside area to explore next time I play.

And I rounded the day off with an episode of Psych. Shawn and Gus love Lassie sooo much :D
