Last week, my Tarot card was 'Death' - the card of transformation.  And I really felt transformed in a number of ways, the most significant being finding that I had the courage to actually speak to people at work about things, without putting them off.  This is much more significant than it sounds, believe me.  My capacity for prevarication is, historically, almost boundless, mostly because my tendency towards introversion and anxiety about making a fool of myself convince me that I don't know what I'm doing.  However, the Director has put me in charge of a piece of work (let's say I'm the PM on it, because that's how I'm approaching it) that involves a number of people doing quite small bits of work that could have a big impact overall, and I want to be worthy of the task.  Which means I have to talk to the people about the things.  So, I am and it was a lot easier than my introversion and anxiety told me it would be, thanks to this transforming courage.  Go, Death!

This week, my card is the 10 of Wands, which I took to be an indication that I needed to pause and consolidate the gains from last week.  Which, workwise, I have done.  I did more of the talking to people - although I did also put it off because other things kept getting in the way, but I did it in the end.  At home, however, it's not gone so well.

The husband was telling me about something he'd watched about the riots in 1981.  My initial instinct was to begin 'Rosa-splaining', as if I knew more about it than he did.  Well, I managed to avoid that!  What I did was give a vague acknowledgement, whilst trying to find something to say that would encourage him to carry on talking that wasn't either dismissive or patronising.  Unfortunately, I took too long and he stormed off in a huff.  Which is understandable.  Hopefully, today, I can mend some bridges.

Also on the subject of work, my mentor is leaving to go to the Other university.  I really wish them well.  It's been an interesting relationship and has certainly given me a lot of encouragement.  They are always so enthusiastic!

And then there's the election.  I'm taking a non-dualist approach and saying, 'it is what it is'.  There are all sorts of analyses that can be done with voting figures, but the result is the result.  Well, now that Boris has his majority, let's see how easy it is to 'get Brexit done'!

ONE - GAMING
So, FF fans will be aware that there used to be debate over how to pronounce 'Seifer'.  I know a lot of people went with 'See-fer' - personally I always said 'Say-fer'.  Kingdom Hearts revealed that it's actually 'Sy-fer'.  So, I still struggle sometimes but I have a definitive answer from Square.

Yesterday, I saw a fb post that said 'Quistis' should be pronounced 'Kaystis' not 'Kwistis'.  I mean... WHAT?!  Since when does 'qui' equal 'kay'?!  I'm not even sure it wasn't someone messing with our heads because I have literally never come across any controversy about Quistis' name before.  And I shall continue to say 'Kwistis'!

However, it has underlined the importance to me of writing names in a way that makes it clear how I want them to be pronounced!

TWO - POLITICS
Next week, we are having the European elections because we failed to leave the EU in time to avoid them.  I don't believe I've ever received literature for them before, but this week we received four leaflets.  Three were for leave-supporting groups - Brexit Party, UKIP, and Tommy (WTSF?!) Robinson - and the other was for the Greens who, officially, support remain.  There is a leave group called Green Leaves.

I posted about this on fb and chose not to comment about leavers who claim to be socialist and non-racist but who would vote for a leave-supporting MEP.  Tommy Robinson?!  Really?!  Although, to be fair, I don't think any leftist leaver would vote for him.  Anyway, my far-left fb friend commented back saying he was surprised that the Greens supported an organisation that encouraged the transportation of live creatures across great distances adding to the environmental crisis.

And I thought, 'do they really support that?'

And my conclusion is that, of course, the Green Party don't support that.  But the UK leaving the EU is not going to stop that from happening.  In fact, it might well increase such activities but the UK wouldn't have any say in the human treatment of animals in the EU.  We are not going to tackle the GLOBAL environmental crisis by hiding away on our little island and pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist because, you know what, we NEED the rest of the world a lot more than they need us!

Also, as a socialist and a Christian, I believe in working together.  I get that there are many, many problems with the EU but we will still be impacted by them if/when we leave because we will still have to deal with the EU as a body.  My far-left friend would hate to hear this but I think it's an elitist position to say, 'we're so much better than you and we're going to do everything on our own' - which is quite obviously bullshit anyway.

And Brexit is such a huge distraction from the REAL issue of the day which is - we have less than 30 years of breathable air and drinkable water!!!  We really need to be working together at a global level, not squabbling over who holds the higher moral ground.  Because, you know what, none of us have ANY moral ground.

THREE - I FORGET STUFF
Last night, I watched the latest episode of 'Have I Got News For You', which was stored on my Tivo.  Underneath, I saw there was an episode of 'Victoria' taped.  (BTW - why do I still say 'taped' when this is a digital recording?  LOL)  I was puzzled by this because I thought I was up to date with it and the last episode was this Sunday.  Turns out it was on last Sunday and I didn't watch it.  And I have absolutely no idea what I was doing last Sunday evening to make me miss it.

FOUR - IT'S SATURDAY
This means some housework, some gaming, some time with my boys.

Theresa May said she'd resign as PM if MPs backed her deal.  They still rejected it.  The encouraging thing, for me, in this was that it showed the MPs were voting against the deal rather than against her - because a bad deal is always a bad deal regardless of who the PM is.  But what does it mean for her position, now?  I honestly think she's only held on as long as she has because nobody else wants to be responsible for this shitstorm.

I do think that whoever was in charge of negotiating for Britain would have had a tough ride but there were so many missed opportunities.  First of all, after the referendum, take a step back and lay out the various options in broad terms.  Give everyone some breathing space.  A 'cooling off period' if you will.  I know there are people who voted 'leave' as a protest because nobody - literally NOBODY - thought leave would win.

Even without that, a good step would have been to gather together a group of MPs from across the House that represented the various viewpoints.  Because people voted 'leave' for different reasons and 'remain' for different reasons.  To say all Brexiteers are like X and all Remainers are like Y is false.  This group could have reached a consensus on what 'Brexit' actually means.  Because 'Brexit means Brexit' is as stupid a statement as 'strong and stable'.

THEN, with a consensus established, we could have gone to the negotiating table with the EU.  And the Brexit Secretary could have done the negotiating because, you know, that's their job.

The shambles that we are in is due to Theresa May who has put her own political career ahead of everything else, and her party ahead of the country.  And in 'opposition' we have Brexiteer Corbyn who is now whipping his MPs to vote for a second referendum!  If you believe in a Socialist Brexit then say so!  Show us what that could look like!  Give us an alternative!!!

Final rant - Brexiteers like to say that to remain in the EU would be a betrayal of the 17.4 million who voted 'leave'.  But this shambles betrays everyone, and not just the very similar number of people who voted 'remain'.

I am currently annoyed by the marketing for 'Pet Semetary'.  "Based on a book by the writer of 'IT'".  Can we not use the words 'novel' and 'Stephen King'?  Are people really so clueless and/or unable to look stuff up?!

And I also had something of a revelation.  I mentioned to a colleague that I'd been sleeping badly due to getting too hot at night and she said, 'I used HRT - couldn't have coped without it'.  Doh!  Now, I'm not usually a fan of managing health issues through medication but a bit of research has suggested that this could go on for 4-8 years.  A year or two and I might be willing to live with it, but 8 years?!  No thank you.  Of course, it might depend on when you start counting.  The hot flushes and night sweats have only been going on for 6 months or so, but the shortening of my periods and their increasing frequency has been going on much longer.  Anyway, I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor and see what we can sort out.
