Good idea!
Jun. 10th, 2025 08:56 pmThis time last year I was enjoying YTers enjoying FFVII, griping about bad writing, and prepping for Sunday.
Today I ran the idea of a team-building exercise past my LM, who was very supportive. We're putting together a proposal including re-establishing the role of the PMF and the purpose of the detailed tasks being requested from the top. It would be nice if the people who want the Thing explain to people why they want it. And remind people that the 'F' stands for framework and it's designed to be flexible and fit any size or type of project.
I popped into Matta's on the way in to work to pick up some more Greek coffee (the bag didn't last quite as long as I estimated!), and made the mistake of taking a walk right round the shop - I also got some Caribbean soup mix, some curry sauce thing, and some Indian sweets. I would have done the curry for tea but I had left over curry and rice for my dinner! We tried the sweets though - a kind of dry baklava, very light and not sticky at all.
And I also ran into Barnardo's on the off-chance and picked up some tops for husband. On the way home, I went to the Liverpool shop and got a father's day present for my stepdad and a birthday present for Eldest Grandson. And then into the card shop for cards. I am feeling VERY organised.
Had a nice chat with husband after tea and then came up to watch The Rookie. The TOs are learning as much as the rookies, which is good to see. And Wesley is seething at a colleague of his wife's that he knows has dreams about her - but he has to keep the information confidential. And Chen's boot keeps coming up with elaborate excuses - wonder when she's going to twig?
I read an article about 'hard' v 'soft' magic - hard is when the reader knows a lot about the mechanics of the magic and soft is when they don't. And it's connected to story-telling more than world-building. There is magic in my Nova story, but I hadn't thought of it in those terms. The Sweetheart is a hedge-witch, the RL woman uses her phone, and Nova has the gift of sight that is enhanced by the fumes in the oracle chamber. So, that's quite hard...? The way their 'magic' works is easy to understand. Oh, and Nova and her 'friend' communicate through telepathy. When I realised that, I had a real 'doh!' moment. But that would be soft...? I'm not going to try to explain how telepathy works :D
I also watched a YT video about Sylvia Plath. One of the newsletters I subscribe to - The Marginalian - mentions her quite a lot but never a word about her racism or antisemitism. But there are also celebrations of James Baldwin and Toni Morrison. I'm not sure I subscribe to separating the artist from the art - the art comes FROM that artist, after all. I do recognise that none of us are without sin, but I also reserve the right to choose what art I consume. I suppose Maria Popova (the 'curator' of The Marginalian) looks for the positives in all the people she talks about. And I haven't stopped reading Richard Rohr despite the number of times he uncritically quotes Jung. We humans are messy creatures and none of us should be defined by either our worst or best moments.
