Walking and geeking and despairing
Jun. 25th, 2022 08:23 amThe husband and I have had some nice walks this week. Hooray for living at the top of the hill with (mostly) reasonable pavements! We have a fairly standard route - along Hope Street to the Metropolitan Cathedral (sometimes we continue walking past it to Brownlow Hill, then turn and walk through that part of the UoL campus), round Abercromby Square (another choice here - straight on to Myrtle Street or through the next bit of the campus with a possible stop off at one of the picnic benches), across Myrtle Street, along Bedford Street South, up Falkner Street, along Sandon Street into Falkner Square (another choice - straight on or turn into the 'park' to take a turn and/or another sit down), then down Upper Parliament Street and home. We've started using the front door because it's easier for the husband to manage than the three steps up in the back garden, but adds a short walk up and down our street at the beginning and end. We can do the whole thing in just under an hour, taking the shortest route - or we can spin it out to over two hours with the longer route and rests/eating stops.
I'm reconnecting with the Moomin books. I'm not actively feeling much one way or the other - but Snufkin's attitude to not owning STUFF is resonating and feels remarkably modern.
I am, however, LOVING the third series of The Umbrella Academy. The first episode was laugh out loud funny. If you haven't watched it yet and you have Netflix, I seriously recommend it. Five continues to be the stand-out character for me, but they are all a delight. Sibling rivalry and family trauma and super-powers, oh my. I was talking to a colleague about how daunting playing 'catch up' can be - there are seven series? with like 20+ episodes each?! - but this is just 3 series (so far) with 10(?) episodes each; very doable!
As a side note, I also continue to recommend The Good Place - whilst it's on the longer side in terms of number of episodes, the episodes themselves are shorter, so it's possible to watch three in about an hour.
I've enjoyed the Playstation Access videos this week. There was one the other day about new games coming to PS5 with Dave imitating Ash complete with pink wig and fake Midlands accent - hilarious. Then I watched the recording of the live stream of some of the games that are free on PS+ Prem - of the games they played, Dark Chronicle looked most like 'my thing'. And the Friday Feature was about boss moves that shouldn't be allowed, with Rob reminiscing about when he had great hair.
And as for the last point... It's not just the overturning of Roe v Wade (although, God knows, that's terrible), it's the continued mess of Brexit. And the cost of living crisis. And keeping the 'what if my job isn't as safe as I think it is?' anxiety at bay.
But, let's finish on a positive note! It's Saturday, it isn't raining, and we're all alive :D See you next week, DW!
