Can a film be perfect? Nearly...
Feb. 29th, 2020 08:25 amWent to see 'Emma' yesterday and it is almost perfect - rather like Emma herself, I suppose!
Things to love:
- The proposal!!! Oh, the proposal...
- A very truthful adaptation that also brings out all sorts of things in the book that I'd never really noticed (one thing being Emma's sneering at the way Jane's letters are pored over, then poring over Frank's!)
- I was laughing from the very beginning
- The whole cast perform brilliantly
- Bill Nighy bringing Mr Woodhouse quite literally to life but without taking over
- The servants are brought out in a way I've never seen in a period drama before
- The director is almost a performer in their own right - little touches throughout that let you know they were paying attention
- Setting, costumes, etc, etc
Things to make me go, 'Oh...':
- Mrs Goddard's pupils in their red cloaks and peaked bonnets...
- Miss Bates on Box Hill (Miranda Hart brilliantly capturing the pathos in this 'comedy' character)
- Even Mrs Elton can be right (but, in general, her HAIR, Louisa!)
Things that weren't quite right (for me) but didn't spoil my enjoyment of the whole:
- Mr Knightly was, I think, a little closer to Emma's age than in the book (probably about modern sensibilities)
- Emma running around without a bonnet and shawl
Anyway, I heartily recommend you go and see it!
