My mother and step-father came round this morning to tell us what photo's from the ones we took at Christmas they want copies of. Which is fine. We only saw them last week for baby grandson's birthday but part of my sort-of resolution about family is to see more of them. And I had even got myself organised enough to have their anniversary present ready! But they were in full-on 'we're only interested in us' mode - which is pretty par for the course but there was an added side of 'we're not even going to listen to each other and talk over each other' with a dash of 'we're going to correct each other over the most trivial points' just to really top it off.

I believe my step-father is the worst offender in all this but my mother really isn't much better. Two weekends in a row isn't good for us. I'll try to meet up with them in the café at work to hand the copies over.

They were telling us about a programme they were watching about the Miners' Strike in the '80s, which is an important point in British history but it's also likely to leave me feeling angry and depressed. I don't watch much television and I want what I do watch to make me feel better not worse. It's also the main reason I don't watch mainstream news any more. I manage to stay informed but I get to choose what stories make it to my brain.

Then there was the usual Saturday round of cleaning and gaming and watching The Traitors, Australia. In a telephone conversation the other day, my mother declared she wouldn't watch The Traitors because it's based on deceit and sneakiness - which, to be fair, put me off initially. But the psychology of it all is so interesting, and seeing how people come to decisions on who to trust is fascinating. Also, as I said to the husband, our society is now at the point where lying counts as entertainment. He countered with, 'It's all about lies' - which I suppose it is.

The other night when I was flicking through the menu on the telly I spotted something called 'Soft & Quiet', and the description piqued my interest enough for me to record it. I put it on tonight and... it was not what I was expecting. A group of white women start up a group called 'Daughters of Aryan Unity'... or something like that. I had to stop watching. I know something like that SHOULD be hard to watch but... I just couldn't. I don't believe anyone involved in the film agrees with the stuff the characters were talking about, btw. I'm sure it was intended to make a point. I don't know what point because I didn't get to the end.

It's very rare that I turn a film off without watching the whole thing. 'The Invention of Lying' comes to mind as an example. Ricky Gervais isn't my favourite person to begin with. But I'll put up with quite a lot to see it through to the end. Occasionally, though, I just have to nope out.
